TE ARA REO - A journey to identity through language
9.30am, Saturday 18 October
This session explores the journey of two Māori men who have each followed unique paths to reclaim their language, culture, and identity. Mike McRoberts, who has spent his life committed to journalism, grew up without a sense of belonging or connection to his heritage and te ao Māori. Mike will share his journey of growth and reclamation of identity through language, which is detailed in his new memoir, Speaking My Language Te Kōrero i Tōku Reo.
Accompanying Mike is Donovan Farnham, a renowned tutor, mentor, and champion of te reo Māori. He recently released his book, Whānau: Reo Māori phrases to share with the people you love. Donovan’s language journey has been very different to Mike’s, and he is passionate about supporting people in a gentle, accessible way to strengthen their use of te reo Māori at home.
