Friends of the Festival

Under renewed leadership, KUPU is evolving beyond just a festival, into a movement that embraces diversity in expression and delivery. KUPU is evolving beyond the familiar format to expand into new forms of storytelling to reach new audiences and explore new places. It is adopting fresh channels, new language approaches, and modern ways of project managing and delivering events — continuing to grow while holding fast to its kaupapa.

This evolution will demand more than funding. It will call for wisdom, guidance, and shared conviction — from those who see in our words the outline of a future where Māori literature stands at the centre, not the margins.

That is why we are gathering a small circle of patrons and companions — individuals who believe, as we do, that there can never be too many kupu.

Together, these patrons will become the words themselves — forming the verses, stanzas, and lines of a living story that keeps growing: a book still being written, a poem still taking shape, a waiata that will be sung for generations.

A welcoming step into the KUPU whānau. You’ll enjoy the festival with a dedicated day pass, receive direct updates and insights from the organising team, and have access to a special patron channel to share feedback or ideas throughout the year.

For those who wish to walk a little closer. Alongside your day pass and festival access, you’ll enjoy reserved seating, RSVP privileges, and an invitation to our pre-festival patrons’ gathering — a space to connect with organisers and other supporters of Māori storytelling.

Partners help shape the festival’s journey. You’ll receive recognition in print and online, two complimentary day passes, a Gala Dinner invitation, and a commemorative KUPU taonga or pin. Your insights through the patron channel actively inform the growth of the festival’s next chapters.

Champions stand at the heart of KUPU’s vision. With two festival passes, two Gala Dinner invitations, dedicated RSVP support, and direct dialogue with the Kaihautū, Champions play an active role in guiding new projects and joining exclusive cultural exchanges under the travelling festival [ADD ATHE OFFICIAL NAME HERE].
