HEI KOROWAI KUPU - A cloak of words

3.00pm, Saturday 18 October

Before hanging our kete of conversations upon the walls of the ancestral house, we invite you to this powerful closing session with Ahorangi Ngāhuia Te Awekōtuku, author of Mau Moko, Tahuri, and Hine Toa: A story of bravery, which won the 2025 Ockham General Non-Fiction Award.

A trailblazing voice in women's, queer, and Māori liberation movements in Aotearoa, Ngāhuia grew up in 1950s Ōhinemutu craving higher education. In her fiery and compelling memoir, Ngāhuia recounts moving to Auckland to attend university, advocating resistance as a founding member of Ngā Tamatoa and the Women's and Gay Liberation movements, and becoming a critical voice in protests from Waitangi to the streets of Wellington.
